If writing time has started to feel harder lately, you’re not alone. This stretch of the school year can be especially challenging for elementary teachers. The weather is cold, motivation is lagging, and students in grades 1–5 often struggle to stay engaged during writing instruction.

As a classroom teacher, I’ve felt this shift right alongside my students. Writing already requires a lot of focus and stamina, and when energy is low, engagement can drop quickly. That’s why I’ve been intentional about using simple, realistic strategies to increase student engagement during writing time—without adding more prep or stress.

These are strategies I actively use in my elementary classroom, and they’ve helped re-energize writing instruction, boost motivation, and make writing time feel enjoyable again for both my students and me.

1. Provide Student Choice to Increase Writing Engagement

One of the most effective ways to increase student engagement in writing is by providing meaningful choice. When students feel connected to their writing topics, they are far more motivated to write—and to keep writing.

Choice doesn’t have to be overwhelming or unstructured. For example, during informational writing, I allow students to choose an animal or topic of interest. That single decision instantly increases buy-in. I also use tools like heart maps to help students generate personal ideas for narrative writing and journaling.

Offering options such as blank book templates, different paper layouts, writing journals, or letter-writing templates gives students a sense of ownership. When elementary students feel their ideas matter, writing becomes something they want to do—not something they avoid.

2. Use Fun, Purposeful Writing Tools

Elementary students love novelty, and writing tools can be a powerful motivator when used intentionally. Special pens reserved for the writing process, tiny books for final drafts, gel pens as a celebration tool, or decorated writer’s notebooks can completely change how students feel about writing.

These tools don’t distract from learning—they support it. They make writing feel important and special. When students associate writing time with positive experiences, they’re more willing to persevere through the harder parts of the writing process.

Using fun writing tools also helps reinforce that writing is not just an assignment—it’s a craft worth taking pride in.

3. Create a Writing Environment That Supports Focus and Creativity

The classroom environment plays a huge role in writing engagement for elementary students. Writing requires focus, creativity, and a sense of calm, so I intentionally adjust the environment during writing time.

This might look like soft background music, flexible seating options such as carpet squares or lap desks, dimmed lights, or lamps instead of overhead lighting. These small changes signal to students that writing time is different and important.

Creating a cozy, inviting writing environment helps students settle in, reduces distractions, and supports longer writing stamina—especially for students in grades 1–5.

4. Provide Opportunities for Peer Writing and Collaboration

Writing doesn’t always have to be a silent, independent activity. Many students benefit from talking through their ideas before writing. Providing opportunities for peer writing can significantly increase engagement and confidence.

In my classroom, students might brainstorm together, plan side by side, or work collaboratively during informational writing units. Writing with peers helps students clarify their thinking, generate ideas, and feel supported.

This approach also builds a strong classroom community and mirrors how writing often works in the real world. When used intentionally, peer collaboration becomes a powerful tool for motivating elementary writers.

5. Celebrate, Share, and Publish Student Writing Authentically

One of the biggest factors in writing motivation is purpose. When students know their writing will be seen, shared, or celebrated, engagement increases naturally.

I regularly take photos of students writing and share them with families, display writing in the hallway, or invite administrators to observe writing time. We also write for real audiences—letters for holidays, special events like Custodian Day or Veterans Day, or classroom celebrations.

Authentic publishing sends a clear message to students: your writing matters. This builds pride, confidence, and a stronger writing identity for elementary learners.

Final Thoughts for Elementary Writing Teachers

This time of year can feel heavy, and if writing engagement is slipping, it doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong. Sometimes small, intentional shifts are all it takes to bring energy back into your writing block.

These writing engagement strategies for grades 1–5 have helped me re-energize writing instruction and support my students during a challenging part of the school year. You don’t need to implement all five at once—start with one and build from there.

Improving student engagement during writing doesn’t require a full curriculum overhaul—small, intentional shifts can make a big impact.

Writing should feel meaningful, creative, and achievable for elementary students. With the right supports in place, it can become a part of the day they truly enjoy.

Writing constructed responses can be one of the trickiest skills for students to master. That’s why I started using the RACES strategy in my classroom—and let me tell you, it made a huge difference.

One of the best decisions I made was introducing RACES with a detective theme in my third grade classroom. I told my students they were “text detectives,” and their job was to investigate reading questions and find strong evidence to solve each “case.” We had magnifying glasses, themed anchor charts, and even detective folders for our writing work. Not only did this make the process more engaging for my students—it made it more fun for me to teach! I looked forward to our writing block every day, and the students were genuinely excited to write. During an observation, my principal commented on how involved and focused the class was, and she loved how the detective theme created a purposeful buzz around writing. It brought structure and energy into our workshop, which is a win in any classroom.

Instead of blank stares or incomplete answers, my students began crafting full, thoughtful paragraphs with confidence. Whether you teach third grade or upper elementary, RACES can help your students build strong writing habits, respond to text-dependent questions, and feel successful along the way.

1. It Gives Students a Clear Framework

When students are asked to write about their reading, many don’t know where to start. The RACES writing strategy gives them a step-by-step structure they can follow:

Restate the question,
Answer it,
Cite text evidence,
Explain the evidence, and
Sum it up.

It’s a simple acronym that helps break down paragraph writing into manageable pieces. Instead of “just write more,” we’re giving students a clear plan. This kind of structure is especially helpful for reluctant writers or English learners who need scaffolding. Over time, the routine becomes second nature—and that predictability builds confidence. RACES doesn’t limit creativity—it gives students a solid foundation to organize and express their thinking clearly.

2. It Builds Confidence in Responding to Text

Constructed response writing can be intimidating, especially when students are unsure of what’s expected. But with the RACES format, they don’t have to guess. Each step provides direction, so students know exactly how to respond to a text-based question. They’re no longer overwhelmed by a blank page—they’re empowered with a process. I’ve watched even my most hesitant writers begin to take ownership of their work once they understood the steps. They learn to restate the question, craft a clear answer, and back it up with evidence. The more they practice, the more confident they become—not just in writing, but in their overall comprehension. That confidence transfers to every subject, making RACES one of the most impactful tools in my classroom.

3. It Strengthens Reading Comprehension

Writing about reading deepens understanding. The RACES strategy helps students engage more closely with the text because they have to return to it, pull out relevant details, and explain their thinking. That process goes beyond surface-level comprehension and encourages analysis. Students begin to read with purpose—looking for evidence, drawing inferences, and connecting ideas. This habit of citing and explaining what they read makes them stronger thinkers and readers. I’ve even seen improvements in their speaking skills during book discussions and small groups. RACES teaches students how to process information, communicate clearly, and support their ideas—all key skills across content areas.

4. It Prepares Students for State Testing

We all know constructed response writing is a major part of most standardized tests. When students don’t have a strategy, they either skip these questions or give incomplete answers. That’s why using RACES writing prompts and text-dependent questions throughout the year is so effective. It mirrors the type of structured, evidence-based writing required on state assessments. Practicing RACES in the classroom builds the stamina, confidence, and skills students need to succeed during testing. They learn to slow down, plan their response, and check that they’ve included all the necessary parts. I teach my students to mentally “check off” each part of RACES as they write, which reduces stress and increases their chances of scoring well. Test day becomes less overwhelming when students feel prepared—and they often surprise themselves with how much they can do!

5. It Encourages Consistent Writing Habits

Consistency is key when teaching writing. Students thrive when they know what to expect. The RACES strategy becomes a routine that helps students stay organized and focused. Over time, I’ve seen my students apply this structure automatically, even without prompts or sentence starters. They begin to recognize what a complete response looks and feels like. This consistency leads to better writing across all subjects—from ELA and social studies to science and math explanations. It’s especially helpful for students who struggle with executive functioning or organizing their thoughts. RACES acts as a built-in checklist that keeps them on track and gives them confidence in their work. As a teacher, it simplifies instruction, allowing you to focus on refining ideas rather than reteaching structure again and again.

6. It Can Be Fun and Engaging—Especially with a Theme!

Writing doesn’t have to feel like a chore. One of my favorite ways to make the RACES strategy more engaging is by using a detective theme. I tell my students they’re “evidence detectives” on a mission to solve the case of a tricky reading question. Their job is to restate the prompt, answer it clearly, and then search the text for “clues” (aka evidence) to support their thinking. Framing writing as an investigation adds just enough excitement to hook even reluctant writers. I use themed anchor charts, student pages, and classroom visuals to build the detective vibe—and they love it. It turns something that could feel like hard work into a challenge they’re eager to complete. You don’t need to go all-out to make it memorable—a few themed materials can go a long way. It’s a great way to boost motivation while reinforcing the skills they need to succeed with constructed response writing.

1. Start with a Strong Foundation: What is Writer’s Workshop in the Classroom?

Before diving into mini-lessons and writing projects, it’s important to introduce what Writer’s Workshop is and why it matters. Students need to understand the purpose of this daily writing block—why we gather together to learn, why they’ll be writing independently, and why sharing our work is so valuable. I explain that Writer’s Workshop is a time when everyone is a writer, including me. We talk about growing as writers, embracing mistakes, and understanding that revision is part of the writing journey.

During the first weeks of school, I focus on teaching writing workshop management and procedural lessons. I model the writing process: prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, conferencing, and publishing. We explore each step with anchor charts, shared writing, and co-created examples to help students internalize the structure and routines. This strong foundation allows students to gain confidence and see themselves as capable writers right from the start.

4. Build a Community of Writers Through Sharing and Celebration

A strong writing community is essential for a successful Writer’s Workshop. I start small with turn-and-talks and partner shares, gradually building to Author’s Chair and whole-group celebrations. We teach how to give kind, helpful feedback and how to be respectful, engaged listeners.

Writing celebrations—whether it’s a gallery walk, a writing café, or simply applause from classmates—happen early and often. These moments build confidence and show students that their words matter.

One of our first writing pieces is our “Hopes and Dreams” for the school year. I model my own goals and guide students to reflect on their personal and academic hopes. These first pieces are published and displayed on a bulletin board.

We kicked off Writer’s Workshop by writing our Hopes and Dreams for the year! These first pieces set the tone for goal setting, reflection, and writing with purpose. Our words matter—and these dreams remind us why we write.

Displaying these early writing pieces sets a tone of pride, purpose, and celebration. It reminds students that their writing is meaningful and valued.

5. Differentiate Writing Instruction to Support All Writers

One of the biggest strengths of the Writer’s Workshop model is its flexibility. Whether you’re supporting reluctant writers or pushing advanced students, differentiation is built into every part of the process. I offer graphic organizers, sentence stems, and writing checklists for students who need extra structure. For students who need a challenge, I encourage experimentation with figurative language, word choice, and narrative craft.

Writing conferences are the heart of this differentiation. During these 1:1 moments, I learn what each writer needs, set personalized goals, and offer targeted feedback. These short check-ins create powerful growth moments for each student.

During the revising mini-lesson focused on “A = Add” (from the ARMS strategy), differentiation happens naturally. 1. Review Behavior Expectations

Teaching rules and expectations is not just something that needs to be on your lesson plans for August, but also for any time during the school year when students need a refresher about good and poor choices in the classroom and school. 

Have you heard about the Ninja Life Hacks Book Series, by Mary Nhin? If not, you are in for a treat! This book series (perfect for grades K-3) was created to help teach children about important life skills, such as listening, dealing with difficult emotions, goal-setting, developing self-control, and overcoming anxiety. Other books share a message about the importance of gratitude and kindness.

There are currently 65 books in this series and my students LITERALLY just can’t get enough of them! 

These books are an awesome refresher for behavior expectations. I love to read aloud the story, Quiet Ninja, to review expected behaviors for walking in the hallways and using a quiet voice during independent reading and writing time.

2. Winter themed reading and writing activities

Snow, gingerbread, winter…oh my! For my guided reading groups, I love to pull out all my winter-themed stories to read with my readers. I love how my students are easily able to relate to these reading passages and make connections to what is happening with the characters in the story. 

I make sure to use both a mix of fiction and nonfiction texts with my readers. Reading about how to make a snowman? Go outside and make a snowman or have your students make a snowman craft during indoor recess! 

3. Build Classroom Community

All educators know how important it is to take time at the beginning of a new school year to establish a welcoming and inviting classroom environment. Our goal is to help all students feel safe, welcomed, and included. One way that I do this is to read aloud different multicultural picture books, all with similar themes- each book promotes inclusion, diversity, justice, empathy, compassion, love. The week after winter break is a great time to provide time and space for students to reconnect with each other. Encourage students to share stories and pictures about something they would like to share about their break.

Or, do students celebrate a different holiday? You can also use this time to share different holidays that your students might celebrate, such as Diwali. 

Have you heard of the picture book, Binny’s Diwali? The story begins with Binny waking up nervous but happy because today was her day to share about Diwali, the Festival of Lights. Her teacher asks each student to talk about their favorite holiday. Binny taught her classmates that Diwali is the Festival of Lights, a Hindu holiday that lasts five days and celebrates the victory of goodness and hope.

#4. Recommit to expected reading behaviors

At the beginning of the school year, it takes me at least 6 weeks to teach procedural and management-based minilessons, which allows me to successfully implement reading workshop in my second-grade classroom. When we come back from break, I make it a priority to revisit 5 very important minilessons, to ensure that the reading workshop is running smoothly in my classroom.

The 3 minilessons that I reteach after break include:

1. Readers show expected behaviors during reading workshop
2. Readers shop for “just-right” books that fit like a glove
3. Readers treat books, other readers, and reading time with respec

As I revisit these lessons, I make sure to refer to the anchor charts that we created as a class at the beginning of the year. We review what reading workshop looks like and sounds like in order to create an environment that supports all readers.

#5. Plan a winter craft or art project

Art projects with winter themes are a great activity to do for your first week back! Not only are they a great way to ease into the “back to school” routine, but they are also a great way to motivate and engage students.

On the last day of school before winter break, we watched the movie Polar Express. After reading the book and watching the movie, we created the train with pastels on black construction paper. For the “snow” I mixed together glue with shaving cream. In doing so, it creates a “puffy” effect. The kids LOVE this project and it is so simple!

Before we get started, let’s remember the goals of reading workshop.

During Reading Workshop:

• It follows a consistent structure everyday: 15 minute mini-lesson, 40 minutes of independent reading, and 5 minute closing/sharing
• Readers talk adn write about books
• Readers have a respect for books, others, and reading time
• The teacher provides a mini-lesson daily and meets with students in groups or individually
• Readers shop for “just right” books in the classroom library and the school library
• Readers read everyday
• Students are engaged in authentic, meaningful literacy activities.

The ultimate goal of reading workshop and reading class in general should be that that they will experience and develop a love for reading that they carry with them through life.

Below is a list of my top 5 tips for implementing reading workshop in your classroom.

#1 Don’t Skip Procedural Mini-Lessons Before Starting Reading Workshop

Before jumping in to reading workshop on the first weeks of school, instead spend about 2-3 weeks teaching the following lessons in preparation. Students need to understand all the expectations first, so reading workshop can flow smoothly. 

1. Readers identify the structure of reading workshop- mini-lesson, independent reading, sharing/closing.
2. Readers identify and follow reading workshop expectations to build reading stamina.
3. Readers use book nooks to organize all of their reading workshop materials.
4. Readers choose just-right (or appropriate) books from the classroom library on their assigned shopping day.
5. Readers reflect on their growth as a reader.

A complete list of procedural mini-lessons that I teach are included in my Reading Workshop Unit One Resource. This resource will take you step by step by listing different mini-lessons that you will teach to make reading workshop a success! Most importantly, it will inspire your students to develop a love for reading time. There are 23 mini-lessons that are included in this file, which focus on establishing routines and setting expectations for implement reading workshop with your primary students.

#2 Focus on Creating a Sense of Excitement About Reading and Reading Workshop

Even though we are spending a lot of time setting expectations for reading workshop during the first few weeks, don’t forget that the main goal for any group of students is for them to develop a love of reading!  So, make sure you are giving them time to read and explore different genres of books. Many times, when students don’t enjoy reading, they just haven’t found the right book. 

Think of ways to incorporate fun into reading time. You could build anticipation for the classroom library opening using caution tape. (see more on that here). You could turn out the lights and let students use flashlights, let students pick a spot to sit, or even just play instrumental music in the background. Have stuffed animals or pillows? Let students sit or lay on a comfortable pillow and read to the stuffed animal. You could even read the first page from some of your favorite books and display them at the front of the room for kids to borrow. Get creative! Think about what your students might enjoy. 

#3 Spend Enough Time Setting Expectations, Modeling, and Practicing Reading Workshop

Many times at the beginning of the year, it is easy to feel rushed to get to other curriculum. Trust me, spend the time making sure your students know what is expected of them during reading workshop time. You will save tons of time throughout the year correcting behavior when you should be meeting with small groups, etc. 

Model what to do and even what not to do. Have students point out the mistakes you made as you put a book back incorrectly, or shout out when you should be reading. Not only do students find this hilarious most times, it reveals important points and contributes to great class discussions about why that is not helping the class learn as a whole. Also, students generally need to practice for themselves several times while you observe before you even meet with groups. 

#4 Get to Know Your Readers 

At the beginning of the year focus on spending time with each child in your class. Get to know them as a person and as a reader. Relationships go a very long way with students. If they know and trust you, and you show an interest in getting to know them, they will be much more likely to not only learn from you, but be invested in their own learning. 

Have them tell you about the book they picked that day, ask if they like dogs since they chose a book about them, have them read a paragraph to you and informally assess their reading skills. Get to know your students. 

#5 Keep it Simple 

Do not overcomplicate reading workshop time. Focus on the main goals we talked about at the beginning of this blog post and give yourself grace. 

If it seems like too much, try adding one element per day. Create a schedule and stick to it. The students will likely hold you too it after a while too!

Reading workshop is one of the best things I have found that creates life-long readers. I hope you were able to get some useful tips to bring back to your classroom! What other tips do you have about implementing reading workshop at the beginning of the year?

Lesson #1: Teach Readers the Expectations for Reading Workshop

In this lesson, students should learn what a reading workshop should look and sound like in your classroom. 

One way to introduce this is to read a story with your students. I wrote a story called Trevor, the Boy Who Learned to Love Reading. In this story, Trevor is a little boy who struggles with reading. He pretends to read when the teacher is looking at him, distracts other readers around him, daydreams, and reads the same book every day. At the suggestion of his classmate, Trevor decides to read an adventure of Jasmine and Philip book. And guess what happens? He falls in love with reading because he found a book that he loved!

Another way to introduce what a reading workshop should look and sound like is to create a t-chart with your students! On one side of the chart, write “looks like” and on the other write “sounds like”.  Check out the example below: 

Students should help you create this list of expectations. This way they build ownership over the reading workshop and understand what it looks and sounds like to have an environment that supports all students. You could also have students write down the finished list in their reading notebooks to refer to throughout the year. This is the perfect introduction to the reading workshop! 

Lesson #2: Readers Read “Just Right” Books that Fit Like a Glove

In this important lesson, students learn how a just-right book “fits like a glove.” You can watch me teach this lesson by clicking HERE.

In order for students to independently shop for appropriate books in the classroom library, they need to be able to know to determine if a book is “just-right.” 

One way to do this is to create an anchor chart with the following questions: 

1. Do you think the book will be interesting and exciting? 

2. Can you talk to a friend about the book because you understand what is going on? 

3. Can you read almost all the words on a page? 

4. Is this a new book that you have not already read? 

5. Are you engrossed with this book? 

Model this lesson for your students by choosing three to four books from the library. Demonstrate how you take a picture walk through each book, answering these questions until you find a book that is a perfect fit. 

Next, you can have students practice finding a ‘just right” book in the classroom or school library. Once they find one, have them fill out a reflection about what they read and why it was a “just right” book for them. 

Lesson #3: Readers Treat Books with Respect

Teachers spend tons of time and money curating a classroom library and want them to last for a long time and serve as many students as possible.  Students need to know how to treat this space with respect so that everyone gets to enjoy the classroom library. 

In this important lesson, students learn how to treat books with respect. I like to read aloud the story “The Adventures of Jasmine and Phillip,” as a fun way to teach this lesson using a social story. You can listen to me read this story by clicking on the video below. 

Teaching students how to treat classroom library books with respect can be a challenging task. Students will learn and understand the importance of treating books with respect from reading and discussing this unique social story. This is the perfect way to teach your students to not fold book pages, have clean hands when reading, and keep food or drinks away from books.

Here are some other ideas for teaching your students how to treat the classroom library with respect: 

1. Teach expectations you have for independent reading time. Are students allowed to have water bottles and snacks when reading? How do students store their books when they are not reading them? 

2. Read aloud The Adventures of Phillip and Jasmine (YouTube: The Adventures of Phillip and Jasmine) Do you have an example of a book that was destroyed because water spilled on it or food was smeared on one of the pages? Show this book to your students, along with a brand new book in perfect condition. Have a class discussion about the differences between the two books and why it is important to take care of books. 

3. Explain any consequences for not being respectful with books. 

4. Consider making a class “promise,” in which all students agree to take care of books. 

Lesson #4: Readers Think About What They Read

Students need to be thinking about their thinking while they read. This is an essential skill that will follow them for the rest of their lives as readers! In this lesson, students learn how to THINK about what they are reading, by using thought bubbles. You can watch me teach this lesson by clicking HERE. 

Metacognition, or thinking about your thinking, is something the teacher can model every time they read aloud. You can provide thinking stems to help guide and remind students what to be on the lookout for as they read. 

Here are some of my favorite thinking stems to model metacognition:

• I’m wondering… 
• I’m thinking… 
• I’m noticing… 
• I’m visualizing… 
• I’m feeling… 
• This reminds me of…

Lesson #5: Readers Respond to Their Reading

Students learn about the different things that they can write about their reading. In this lesson, students will learn how they will use their reader’s notebook to write as they are reading. I teach my students that “Reading and writing go together like peanut butter and jelly!”

One way you can teach this lesson is to create an anchor chart that includes different things they can write about as a class. Have students share ideas as well as adding your own. 

Inside our readers’ notebooks, we can write: 

*Write our favorite part 

*Create a timeline of events 

*Write about what made you laugh, cry, or gasp 

*Write new facts 

*Ask questions about what we are reading 

*Keep track of the plot *Write a list of character traits 

*Compare character traits 

*Make inferences 

*Draw (in detail!) the setting 

*Identify examples of text features 

Students will then have a turn to start reading and writing about one thing on the anchor chart at the end of the lesson.

I hope you have some great ideas to bring back to your classroom as you get started this school year! 

Coming back to school with a lot of unknowns can be challenging for everyone. The 2020-2021 school year presented a huge challenge for teachers, parents, and students. Whether you taught in-person, virtually, a hybrid schedule, or a mix of all of those, it was hard. 

Just when many thought the days of virtual learning, social distancing, mask-wearing, and crazy schedules were over, here comes another surge in the Covid 19 pandemic. So, it is no surprise that socially distanced classrooms and school buildings are not a thing of the past just yet.

Here are five tips for successfully returning to school with social distancing: 

1. Continue Morning Meetings or Community Building with Students

Usually, my morning class meetings start on the carpet in a class circle. We greet each other, discuss important reminders for the day, and do a class discussion or activity. These activities are great for building classroom community, building social skills, and starting the day on a good note. At the beginning of the year, morning meetings are the perfect way to introduce and practice the classroom expectations and discuss any worries that students have about the upcoming school year. 

Don’t cross these meetings off of your lesson plans just yet! Morning meetings can still take place with social distancing. All is not lost! You can use the same format for meetings, just without sitting together. Students can sit at their desks and greet others with air fives or waves instead of handshakes and fist bumps. You can still do class activities and have important discussions, even when you aren’t sitting together as a class family.  

2. Introduce Safety Rules with Social Stories

Social stories are learning tools that include relevant examples of social exchanges and information during the story and are usually used to teach a specific skill. Introducing rules and expectations with social stories are very effective because students and children get to see different situations play out how they might in the real world! 

I created this Wearing a Mask Social Story to help students understand the reason for mask-wearing during this pandemic. Wearing a mask, or seeing other people wear masks, can cause uncertainty, curiosity, or anxiety in many children. This social story was created to bring an understanding to children about how and why we are currently wearing masks. This story is one that many children will be able to relate to and connect with this year!

3. Involve Students in Creating New Rules 

It’s no secret that students love to be involved in the creation of their classroom community. Children can learn to think about what they want their classroom experience to be like and how they can contribute to that community. They learn to see that feeling safe and belonging within the community takes the establishment of set rules and expectations. 

When creating your classroom rules, have students help! Create a t-chart and add the titles students and teacher to the top. Ask students to describe what they’d like their classmates to be like and what they would like their teacher to be like by listing adjectives for each one. 

Then, examine the list you all created together and discuss why those characteristics and attributes might be important in creating a safe classroom where everyone learns. 

Next, come up with a list of about 3-5 rules that encompass these attributes! For example, keeping safe is always a huge rule at school. A class rule for that could be: “I keep myself and my classmates safe at all times.” This rule covers all safety-related things like….things like no hitting, no jumping off the swings, no taking off your mask, etc…. Write these rules down and have all students sign it like a class contract or promise. Keep them posted all year long. 

So when little Sally jumps off a chair in class, you can say, “Are you keeping yourself and your classmates safe at all times?” 

Having been a part of the creation of these rules and expectations, students will feel more connected and understand why these rules are important to follow! 

4. Prepare Students for Virtual Learning, Just in Case

We don’t know what this year will look like while things are changing every day and each school district has their own rules about how to handle those changes. So, it is a good idea to prepare your students early for the possibility of returning to virtual learning at some point in the year. This way, students will know exactly what to do if learning environments need to change quickly. Being prepared will reduce anxiety and lost learning time too! 

So, from the very beginning, create a backup plan. You could create a set of lessons, like you would for an emergency substitute, online for your students to complete. Have students write down login credentials and practice logging in to the various online learning platforms they may need to access.

5. Model and Practice Social Distancing Expectations 

Students need explicit modeling and practice of any rules. Especially, anytime there has been a long break. Many students did not come to school at all last year at all and have not had to social distance from others. 

It is important to show students what you mean by social distance. How many feet apart? How can they move around the classroom, hallways, bathrooms, lunchroom, library, specials classes, etc while socially distancing? Be sure to show your students what are some safe, socially distanced ways of moving around the school building.
