Looking for a creative writing activity for the beginning of the school year? I don’t know about you, but I RELISH a few minutes of peace and quiet these first few days of school. Teachers do SO much talking at the beginning of the year. Bathroom procedures, fire drill expectations, school/classroom rules…it seems like it never ends!
This is a great activity to use when you need some “teacher time!” I like to use this activity on a Friday afternoon during the first full week of school- when we all are exhausted!!
Directions: Photocopy the same question back to back, since there are 26 spaces for each student. Place one question on every desk. Assign each student a number 1-26. This will be their number to remember for this activity. Instruct students to WRITE their answer to the question on the paper next to their assigned number. Then, say “ROTATE,” and each student will rotate clockwise to the next desk. The student will take a minute (more or less based on the age of your kiddos) to write down a thoughtful answer to the question. After a minute, say “rotate” again, and the students will rotate again in a clockwise position. The student will take a minute to write a thoughtful answer to the question. Keep on REPEATING. Students rotate to all of the desks and the activity is complete when the students end up back at their own desk.
For an extra element of fun, (which I of course highly recommend!!!) arrange the desks in a circle and play some fun music! My students LOOOOVE this music! I LOOOOVE this music!! I just bought the newest CD at Target for only $6.00!!!Check it by clicking HERE. If you are like me, you will not mind your students humming and singing along to the songs. So, you may not get exactly peace AND quiet with this lesson…but you will get some time to breathe.
