National Board Teaching Certification

NBTC

National Board for ProfessionalTeaching Standards just released the scores for the 2010-2011 candidates! Candidates undergo a RIGOROUS one year assessment program. Candidates complete 4 portfolio entries and six prompts that assess content knowledge.

NBPTS Standards are based on the Five Core Propositions that form the foundation for what all accomplished teachers should know and be able to do and provide a reference that helps educators link teaching standards to teaching practice.
         Five Core Propositions

  • Teachers are committed to students and their learning.
  • Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students.
  • Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning.
  • Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience.
  • Teachers are members of learning communities.

I know first hand just how rigorous the program was because I became a National Board Certified teacher in Generalist/Middle Childhood in 2007..and passed on the first time! :)
My mom and I at my district’s board meeting where they congratulated all NBCT’s!

If you are looking for a challenge and have always been one of those teachers who like to “go above and beyond,” this is for you!!!
Are there any NTCB’s out there??? Newly certified, currently a candidate, currently a retake, take one candidates…We want to hear from you!!! Leave us a message!

  1. I certified last year on my first time as well. It's the one thing that I can honestly say I did on my own! I didn't have a mentor–I didn't have anyone read my papers. It was just me, my thinking, my students, and the standards. It was an intensely rigorous and rewarding year. It really makes you think about your teaching.

  2. I certified in 2009 on my first try in Early Childhood. I was also the very first in my district to achieve this! One of the BEST experiences of my career. I recommend it to every teacher.

  3. I had never heard of the National Boards until recently… my best friend since kindergarten is beginning hers so I'll see how she does before I consider it! hehe =)

  4. I certified last year on the first try. It was truely a rewarding process. I learned a lot about myself and my teaching style. While I didn't miss too much of my kids events, I spent a lot of long nights working and revising. In the end cutting 6 pages out of one entry, and 4 out of another. I would totally recommend going through the process!

  5. I certified last year. Passed the first go round, but who knows how! Luckily my writing is better than my study skills which are nonexistent. What's scared me was that I had just submitted my packet in Middle childhood then found out I was moving to 2nd grade! I was terrified I'd have to borrow kids to retake something! Every bit worth it-we get 12% pay increase for now-professionally and personally

  6. I'm in the process of renewing my certification right now. I have just about 6 weeks left in the process and so much left to do. Luckily, it is NOTHING like the original round!!

  7. Hi!

I just found your blog today {and LOVE it}. I've been certified for many years. I'm so glad you wrote this post. I think it's important to spread the word about the process and benefits of National Boards. It also totally changed the way I teach. I felt like I was holding down two jobs as I went through the process, but so glad I did it. I'm your newest follower.
