Hip, Hip, Hooray…It’s a field trip to the next grade!

Ask a next year’s teacher if she/he would mind if your class could visit and ask questions. Prior to going to the classroom, project the “Hip, hip, hooray” slide on your SmartBoard. Announce that your students are going on a field trip…to the next grade! Have your students write some thick, burning questions they have about next year’s curriculum, classroom, homework, behavior….anything!

I take this idea one step further by holding a mock class courtroom with my third graders. I dress up as a judge and invite some fourth graders to be jury members. My students write a persuasive letter to the judge/jury and plead their case, providing plentiful reasons why they deserve to go to the next grade. When they get a “pass” verdict, and they all do!, we then go as a class to a field trip to the next grade!

Persuasive Writing -Tell it to the Judge: I Deserve to go to the Next Grade!

Order in the court…I mean the classroom! The judge and the jury members turn this lesson into a mock trail! Students are put to the test as they read their persuasive paper in front of the court! This lesson is a creative and unique way to teach your students about persuasive writing…while having a little fun in the process!
