Students will learn to infer character traits and also prove their thinking and ideas by referring to the text. I used the story, That’s What Leprechauns Do by Eve Bunting for the anchor charts, but you can use any books with leprechauns as the main character for the lesson.

This file is **common core aligned** and will conclude with the students making an adorable leprechaun craft, featuring the character traits. There are lots of pictures and detailed directions.

This file addresses the following learning targets:
I can demonstrate understanding of figurative language.
I can recognize and explain the meaning of common idioms.

I can recognize idioms when reading Amelia Bedelia books, by Peggy Parish.I can refer to the text to support my ideas. (Three pages)

There is a 17 page black/white student flip book, where students identify the figurative meaning, compared to the literal meaning.

There are 17 colorful posters of idioms that can be used as examples or anchor charts.

There is also a three page extension to this file, in which students are encouraged to read an Amelia Bedelia book and identify the idioms used by Peggy Parish.

I like to focus on one or two idioms per week and complete the flip book over the course of a few weeks.

Although these lessons directly correlate with the fourth and fifth grade common core language standard, it can also be taught and enjoyed with other grade levels.
