Are you looking to teach your students about the characteristics of good citizenship?? There are four lessons (over 100 pages!) to this citizenship unit.

1. Lesson one: Citizenship skits
Standards: CCRA.SL.1 and CCRA.SL.4
Students work in cooperative groups to create and act in their very own skit that will represent either a good citizen or a bad citizen. Older students may have success with creating their own skits. Younger students may be better with using the prompts provided for their citizenship scenario. When ready, invite another class to watch the skits!

2. Lesson two: Rights and responsibilities of U.S. citizens
Standards: CCRA.R.5
Students will identify the rights and responsibilities of being a United States Citizen. You can use page 18 as a formative assessment.

3. Lesson three: American symbols
Standards: CCRA.R.5 and CCRA.R.4
You can use these flip books as a guided reading, shared reading, or even closed reading lesson. Students will be able to identify American symbols and the significance of each American symbol.

4. Lesson four: My role model is a good U.S. citizen
Standards: CCRA.W.2 and CCRA.R.4
Students will identify an adult (or even a young adult) who is their role model. Students will identify the character traits that describe their role model. This is also a good opportunity to discuss how some of the character traits are synonyms and antonyms. Students will be able to explain why their role model demonstrates positive character traits by providing examples through their “my role model writing.” This can be made into a great bulletin board!
