A note to send home to families requesting food magazines, along with pictures of the completed project are included.

Healthy and Unhealthy Breakfast Choices

1. Healthy and unhealthy lunches- In this lesson, students dissect their lunch and observe the different food groups represented. Students will write and/or draw the included foods on the graphic organizer.

2. Compare and contrast lunches- In this lesson, students compare the differences between a healthy and unhealthy lunch. There are two options- posters with clip art of food and posters that are photographs of real foods. Students write about what the lunches have in common and what is different about the two lunches on the graphic organizer of a Venn diagram. This activity also includes two printables of the “Choose my Plate” images.

3. Comparing Two Different Breakfasts- In this lesson, students look at pictures of two different breakfasts. The pictures are photographs of real food. Students identify how many different food groups are represented and place the foods in the correct food group. Lastly, students will use the graphic organizer to determine, if, overall the breakfast is healthy. There is a one-page printable with an image of an empty food tray. On this page, students draw their own healthy lunch or breakfast, carefully choosing foods from each food group.

4. My nutrition label- Students can use the blank template of the nutrition label to fill in with their own information from food that they brought from home. Students write the ingredients and write what they learned on this one-page reflection.

5. Eggs and Cereal Nutrition Facts- For this activity, students read the different nutrition facts for Honey Nut Cheerios and an egg. Students answer the mix of true/false, short answer, and multiple-choice questions about the two nutrition facts.

Food Pyramid Lessons

In these lessons and activities, students learn about the difference between the old and the new food pyramid (focus on exercise).

Sugar lessons, activities and experiment

1. Reading passage and comprehension questions- Students read the four-page reading passage titled, All About Sugar. The reading passage includes real photographs and informational text features, such as captions. Using evidence from the text, students answer a mix of true/false, multiple-choice, and short response questions. An answer key is included.

2. True and False Interactive Sugar Sort- There are 16 cards that have a sentence about sugar. One at a time, a student reads the card and the class determines if the statement is true or false by holding up “true” or “false.” Students have a discussion about the statement and place in under the card “true” or “false.” After this part of the lesson is complete, students will independently read, cut, and sort the sentences into “true” and “false” statements. Resources include directions, 16 statements about sugar, one blank template to write your own, an answer key, and a “sugar shock” color poster to print.

3. Sugar Sleuths- As a follow-up to the whole group true and false interactive sort, students turn into sugar sleuths and independently (or with a partner) read, cut out, and sort all sentences into their own book. There are 16 sentences for the student to sort under “true” or “false.”

4. High Sugar/Low Sugar Food Sort- There are 36 photographs of real food that students identify as “high sugar” or “low sugar.” Students sort the foods into the correct category. This can be done as a whole group or as a center. Resources include a color informational poster about high sugar foods, 36 real photographs in color of common foods, and “high sugar/low sugar” cards to print.

5: Sugar Experiment- Students use sugar cubes to measure out the amount of sugar in their favorite snack. Students compare the amount of sugar in their food to the other snacks students tested.

Students learn facts about sugar in an interactive and fun way. Students will go into further sugar shock when they test their own favorite snack during the sugar test!

Sugar Shock- Brace yourself and brace your students for the sad but true facts about sugar. For example, did you know that the average American child eats 116 POUNDS of sugar a year? Yep! You read that right! This is a lesson the students have to see before they believe!!

Activity 1: Harmful Effects of Sugar Article- Students read the article independently, as a whole group, or with partners and fill out the “3,2,1” graphic organizer to reflect on what they learned. Display the colorful “sugar shock” poster and “warning” and an introduction to reading the article. Resources include a color photograph to display, a one page article about sugar, and two graphic organizers to choose from.

Activity 2: True and False Interactive Sort- There are 16 cards that have a sentence about sugar. One at a time, a student reads the card and the class determines if the statement is a true or false by holding up their sign. Students have a discussion about the statement and place in under the correct category. After this part of the lesson is complete, students will independently read, cut, and sort the sentences into “true” and “false” statements. Resources include directions, 16 statements about sugar, one blank template to write your own, an answer key, and a “sugar shock” color poster to print if you choose to display for a bulletin board.

Activity 3: Sugar Sleuths- As a follow up to the whole group true and false interactive sort, students turn into sugar sleuths and independently (or with a partner) read, cut out, and sort all sentences into their own book.

Activity 4: High Sugar/Low Sugar Food Sort- There are 36 photographs of real food that students must identify as “high sugar” or “low sugar.” Students sort the foods into the correct category. This can be done as a whole group or as a center. Resources include a color informational poster about high sugar foods, 36 real photographs in color of common foods, and “high sugar/low sugar” cards to print.

Activity 5: Sugar Shock Experiment- Your students may just go into shock after this experiment! Students use real sugar to measure out the amount of sugar in their favorite snack. Students compare the amount of sugar in their food to the other snacks students tested.

Activity 6: Letter Writing Reflection- Students will reflect on what they learned throughout this unit by writing a letter about sugar. However, this will be done with a creative twist! Students will write about the topic from the first person point of view, which means that they are writing from the perspective of sugar! Included for this activity is directions for the students, 2 letter templates, an example of a finished letter, and a colorful poster “Dear Humans, Love Sugar” poster to display as a bulletin board.

Activity 7: No Sugar Challenge- What better way to end the unit than with a fun challenge? Students can choose to participate in a “no sugar” or “low sugar” challenge for 10 days. Resources include a note home listing a challenge for each day, a poster to display with facts from the American Heart Association about added sugars, and a participation award in color and also black and white.

1. States of Matter Sort
Students sort each picture according to their state of matter. There are 32 different clip art images of solids, liquids, and gases to sort. There are also 37 different photographs of solids, liquids, and gases to choose from. Lesson includes answer key, student recording sheet, pictures of the finished project, and colorful posters to display for each state of matter.

2. States of Matter Flip Book
As students learn about each state of matter, they use their flip book to write down the definition, characteristics, and examples of each state of matter. Students will also use paint to illustrate how the atoms move in each state of matter.

3. States of Matter Hands-On Lesson
Students will observe how atoms move in a solid, liquid, and gas state by filling up plastic jars with marbles, which represent the atoms.

4. States of Matter Student Project
Students will have a blast cutting out pictures of solids, liquids, and gases from magazines in this interactive project! Students can complete this for homework or in school. Activity includes a note to send home, detailed directions, a self-reflection rubric for students to fill out upon completion of the project.

5. Does Air Have Mass? PHMPRC Experiment
Young scientists are always amazed to see what happens when you stick a napkin in a cup and submerge it in water! Includes picture of experiment, answer key, and student recording sheet for PHMPRC.

6. Does Matter Take Up Space? PHMPRC Experiment
A simple yet engaging experiment for young scientists to explore how matter takes up space. Includes picture of experiment, answer key, and student recording sheet for PHMPRC.

7. Show and Tell With a Twist of Science
Students will bring one item from home, which represents a state of matter, and hide it inside their baggie. Students will use the physical properties that describe the object by writing a riddle. They will read their riddle to the class and have their classmates guess their mystery matter. Activity includes an example with pictures and directions, a note to go home, and a student recording sheet.

8. Mystery Matter
Gather a variety of different objects that represent different states of matter. One object is placed inside different baggies. Students rotate around to each baggie and use their sense of touch to write about what they observe by feeling the object. Activity includes a student recording sheet, a picture of the activity, and numbers to print and staple on to the different baggies.

9. Properties of Matter Posters
Scientists can explore and investigate properties of matter by using their senses to observe and describe objects. There are two colorful posters for each of the 5 different senses, that you can print and display as you teach about the different properties of matter.

10. Comparing Properties of Matter with Candy
