Teaching Reading Behaviors of Real Readers: A Unique Social Story

Are you looking for a story to read aloud to your students, which teaches the reading behaviors of “real” readers? In this story, Trevor is a little boy who struggles with reading. He pretends to read when the teacher is looking at him, distracts other readers around him, daydreams, and reads the same book every day. At the suggestion of his classmate, Trevor decides to read an adventure of Jasmine and Philip book. And guess what happens? He falls in love with reading because he found a book that he loved!

After reading this book, I make an anchor chart with my students, highlighting the positive behaviors of readers.

Characteristics include:

-Readers are engrossed with their book

-Readers stay in one good reading spot

-Readers are focused when reading

-Readers do not distract others

Most importantly- Readers LOVE to read!

In the last page of this book, students sign their name to show they “promise” to treat books with respect.

Pages are in color and black and white, for your preference.

Reader’s Workshop Character Study Unit

In this unit, students identify and infer character traits and feelings and analyze character changes and motivations. Students celebrate the end of this unit with a book character party! Common Core State Standards ELA Checklists for Fourth Grade

What’s Included in this Resource:

1. Fourth Grade CCSS Checklist Cover Page: There are two options to choose from, as well as a black/white and color option.

2. Cover Page for Each Category: There is a cover page (both in black/white and color options) for each of the following categories: Foundational Skills, Writing, Speaking and Listening, Language, Literature, and Informational Text. There is a black/white and color option for each cover page.

3.CCSS Checklists: There are 43 different checklists included for the ELA Standards.

4. List of CCSS in each Strand: I included a list (on one page) of each CCSS for each literacy strand, as convenient way to quickly glance at all the standards.

When I use this resource, I just handwrite the name of my students in the checklist. Please view the picture as an example. It takes awhile to do for all of the checklists, but once it is done you are set for the quarter or school year!

The Common Core State Standards define what students should be able to do by the end of each grade. I created this resource as a way to keep track of the progress of my students with the English Language Arts CCSS.

This resource includes a checklist for each of the THIRD grade CCSS for English Language Arts. The Standards are divided into Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening, and Language Strands. For third grade, the Standards for reading are broken down into the following categories: Literature, Informational Text, and Foundational Skills.

What’s Included in this Resource:

1. Third Grade CCSS Checklist Cover Page: There are two options to choose from, as well as a black/white and color option.

3.CCSS Checklists: There are 43 different checklists included for the ELA Standards.

4. List of CCSS in each Strand: I included a list (on one page) of each CCSS for each literacy strand, as convenient way to quickly glance at all the standards.

5. PDF version and Power Point version: When I use this resource, I just handwrite the name of my students in the checklist. If you prefer to type the names of your students on the checklists, you can use the Power Point version of this resource. In the Power Point version, you are able to insert text boxes and type in your class list. All images, graphics, and content remains protected, as the Power Point slides are JPEG’s.

I Spy Informational Text Features

Non-Fiction Text Features: Are you ready to teach about informational text features in a fun, engaging, and meaningful way?

The activities included in this file will turn your students into text detectives as they investigate the different text features, their importance, and how to use them use them to understand the text.

The unit begins with 8 different, detailed mini-lessons for you to teach your kiddos about captions and photographs, table of contents, headings and subheadings, index, glossary, charts/tables and graphs, types of print and pronunciation, and diagrams.

Then, there are 8 different “missions” that each text detective must investigate, in order to earn their VIP badge from the Chief of Detectives (that’s YOU!)

Your little detectives will investigate the following text features in this unit: photographs and captions, headings and subtitles, charts/tables/graphs, special type of print, glossary, index, table of contents.

Mission One: Informational text and literature Venn diagram- Text detectives compare and contrast two books on the same topic (one literature, one informational text).

Mission Two: Purpose of text features anchor chart- Text detectives will identify each text features and its purpose. Common Core State Standards number 5 and number 7 within the Reading Informational Text strand state the teaching of each text feature and its function.

Mission Three: Text features flip book- Text detectives are assigned a very important mission. Students must find examples of each text feature in their own books, earning a “private detective of text features” badge upon completion.

Mission Four: Private detective of text features badges- Text detectives will wear with pride!

Mission Five: “I Spy With My Private Eye…” The Chief of Detectives will love this interactive lesson as much as your little detectives. Sticky notes are used to track down the different text features during guided reading groups or independent reading.

Mission Six: Text Features Bingo cards- Let your text detectives enjoy a fun game of Bingo, all while reinforcing the important vocabulary words from this unit.

Mission Seven: Text features name tag and posters- The Chief of Detectives can print the text features posters to display as anchor charts throughout the unit. Little detectives can use a informational text features nametags (smaller version of the posters) as a reference throughout the unit.

Mission Eight: Create an information book- The Chief of Detectives has prepared his/her little detectives for their end-of-unit project. Students will apply what they learned about each text feature to create their very own, one-of-a-kind information book. There is a rubric and note to send home included in this file.

The activities in this resource can be a complement to your guided reading groups, reading workshop mini-lessons, or read a-louds.
