Want a hands-on and engaging way to teach your students all about St. Patrick’s Day? Students will LOVE making this unique flip book. You can use these flip books as a guided reading, shared reading, or even close reading lesson.

The St. Patrick’s Day flip book includes one page with the following information:
1. Map of Ireland
2. Irish Flag
3. Story of St. Patrick
4. Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day
5. Leprechauns
6. Four-leaf clover
7. The Blarney Castle
8. Irish sayings
9. Irish national symbols

There is a black and white and also a color option for you to choose from. There is also a front cover page with Irish clip art and a back cover page with Ireland Flag. (I like to use the color option as a completed example of the finished flip book for my students to see.)

After reading about each page, students complete a reflection. There is a one page template for each page.

1. All About Mexico Flip Book: Students read about the physical features of Mexico, the significance and meaning of the Mexican flag, Chichen Itza, Cinco de Mayo, Day of the Dead, mariachi bands, cactuses, popular phrases in Spanish, and traditional Mexican food. Students then reflect on what they read by writing in their 8 page reflection packet.

2. Paper bag piñatas: Students will have a blast making their very own paper bag piñatas as a decoration, a keepsake, or to bust open!

3. Interactive Venn Diagram- Students work together to organize facts into the correct category on the Venn Diagram, which compares Mexico with the United States. There are a total of 16 cards that the students read and place in the correct category on the Venn Diagram. Students then pick three facts for each category and write it on their own Venn Diagram graphic organizer.

4. Buenos Amigos Compliment Writing- Students write compliments about each other during this whole class writing activity. Students will be sure to cherish these kind compliments their buenos amigos (and teacher!) write about them.

5. Party Cart!- This a creative and fun way for your students to show their appreciation for staff members, and at the same time celebrate Cinco de Mayo! Students roll a cart filled with goodies around to the different staff members in the building, thanking them for their service (“Muchas Gracias!”) and wishing them a “Feliz Cinco de Mayo!” as they offer them a snack and refreshment. Here is what is included: A note to send home to parents requesting supplies, colorful posters to display as decorations on the party cart, nametags for student servers, a sign up sheet, student serve script, and a FIESTA! colorful pennant.

6. Cinco de Mayo Fiesta Reflection- Students fill out a one page reflection about their favorite parts of the fiesta.

First Activity: Lincoln and Washington Interactive Venn Diagram
In this lesson, one student at a time reads a fact as the other students raise their popsicle stick to identify if that sentence describes George Washing, Abraham Lincoln, or both presidents. The students have a collaborative discussion to decide the correct president before placing the card in the correct category of the Venn diagram.

Resources included for the Venn diagram:
– Pictures of the completed Venn diagram, detailed directions with how to use in your classroom
– 32 “guess who” facts that describe Lincoln, Washington, or both presidents. These are in color.
– 3 colorful titles for your Venn diagram- Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, both presidents
– “Popsicle stick presidents” signs for your students to glue on popsicle sticks.
– A Venn diagram reproducible for the students to fill out as a reflection of the whole group lesson.

Second Activity: Washington and Lincoln Flip Book
Once the whole-class interactive Venn diagram is complete, students use the facts they learned to create their very own presidential flip book! These flip books are easy to assembly (just photocopy the pages, put them in order, and put two staples at the top!) and make a great bulletin board display!

Resources included for the Washington and Lincoln Flip Book:
– Pictures of the completed flip book, with detailed directions for how to use with your students
– There are 9 pages for each Lincoln and Washington. Students compare their birthplace, death, legacy, and other important facts
– The last two pages share the character traits and holiday that both presidents have in common
– For each page, there is a black and white AND color option for you to choose from. (I like to use the color copy as an example for my students)
