This 45 page file addresses the following learning targets:

1. I can classify, or group, my candy according to its attributes.
2. I can identify my candy as a 2-D shape. I can identify the characteristics of the 2-D shape.
3. I can identify my candy as a 3-D shape. I can identify the characteristics of the 3-D shape.
4. I can use a comparison statement that describes my candy.
5. I can use my candy to write an addition word problem, using key words. I can use my candy to write a subtraction problem, using key words.

Activity 1: Reading passage and comprehension questions- Students read the four-page reading passage titled, All About Sugar. The reading passage includes real photographs and informational text features, such as captions. Using evidence from the text, students answer a mix of true/false, multiple-choice, and short response questions. An answer key is included.

Activity 2: True and False Interactive Sugar Sort- There are 16 cards that have a sentence about sugar. One at a time, a student reads the card and the class determines if the statement is true or false by holding up “true” or “false.” Students have a discussion about the statement and place it under the card “true” or “false.” After this part of the lesson is complete, students will independently read, cut, and sort the sentences into “true” and “false” statements. Resources include directions, 16 statements about sugar, one blank template to write your own, an answer key, and a “sugar shock” color poster to print.

Activity 3: Sugar Sleuths- As a follow-up to the whole group’s true and false interactive sort, students turn into sugar sleuths and independently (or with a partner) read, cut out, and sort all sentences into their own book. There are 16 sentences for the student to sort under “true” or “false.”

Activity 4: High Sugar/Low Sugar Food Sort- There are 36 photographs of real food that students identify as “high sugar” or “low sugar.” Students sort the foods into the correct category. This can be done as a whole group or as a center. Resources include a color informational poster about high sugar foods, 36 real photographs in color of common foods, and “high sugar/low sugar” cards to print.

Activity 5: Sugar Experiment- Students use sugar cubes to measure out the amount of sugar in their favorite snack. Students compare the amount of sugar in their food to the other snacks students tested.

Your students will love learning about character traits with this lesson! Students will also make a cute and creative craft! Lesson is based off of the book, The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything by Linda Williams. Makes an adorable bullentin board!

Lesson includes directions, a template for the craft, student worksheets, and colorful posters to use for an anchor chart or bulletin board headers.

After using student-led conferences for several years, I took an even bigger leap and implemented small group student-led conferences. I was inspired to create this file based off of all the wonderful feedback that I received from the families, students, and administration! A student-led conference provides a great opportunity for the the students to take ownership over their learning and their behavior. Parents are always *amazed* and how their child is taking an active role in their education and learning! (You will be amazed, too!)

This is a customizable PowerPoint file. This file adheres to the copyright laws and does not allow you to manipulate or change the clip art/graphics in any way. This file does allow you to add text boxes and add your own text to the student led conferences stations and agenda.

This is a ZIP file. There is a PDF version, for those customers who are not interested in making any changes and using the ideas exactly as presented in the file.

However, a 15 page PowerPoint file is also included. The slides in the PowerPoint file allows you to add your own text box to the templates (conference agenda, student pages, ect.). You can add your own wording to customize the pages for your students.
