Five for Friday

five for friday

I am linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching for this Five for Friday Post!

1.BIRTHDAY BOOK

I was so touched when one of my sweet students bought the latest “I Survived” book as a present for our classroom library…on her birthday! I adore how she made such a big production out of it- fancy bag, pink tissue paper, it is all just too much! This makes me realize that all those dramatic reading workshop mini-lessons are making an impact and this teacher could not be happier!

We decided to keep this book in its special fancy bag in our classroom library, as a reminder of how books “literally” are a present!

PS…You can totally do this for your birthday and present a book to your students! (Mine is in the summer—boo!)

2.Reading Workshop Anchor Charts Galore

I love reading workshop, but I love it even more when the procedures and expectations are already taught and into place….which means that we can finally dive into THINKING about our READING! Here is a picture of some of our latest (not necessarily greatest!) anchor charts for reading workshop.

4. KID PRESIDENT

Do your students LOVE Kid President as much as mine do? Do YOU love it as much as I do?? Once a week, I will randomly choose a Kid President clip to watch. They are short, inspirational, and funny!

This particular video was “How to Change the World.” After watching this short clip, I gave a writing prompt to my students: What can you do to change the world? Share your ideas after hearing Kid President’s opinion. Here is our learning target:

I love what this sweet kiddo wrote, “This is what I think you can do to change the world. Staying positive is the key!”

5. Fountas and Pinnell testing

F and P testing

Three weeks and 24 students later….I can finally say that I am finished assessing my students for their reading levels. We used to be lucky enough to have a sub come into our classrooms for a day, and then that would give us the opportunity to test our kids without any distractions. With all the budget cuts, those days are gone. It is tough to test all those kiddos, especially at the beginning of the year, when I am just learning about them, their reading interests and their reading behaviors.

Now, I am off to dinner and a movie, in the comfort of my own home.

Have you seen it yet? If so, please tell me it is just as good as the first one!

  1. I totally bought PP2, too!! :) My second grade teacher used to have use bring a book to share with our classroom library instead of cupcake parties. I LOVED it, as a book lover, and we all tried to out-do each other with our books. My birthday is 2 days after Christmas, so my book was Christmas themed. :) Such a great tradition!!
