Let’s face it – it can often be hard to get {and keep!} students’ attentions. If you are teaching summer school right now – you are feeling this pretty hard right now, I’m sure. Even in May and June a child’s attention span is a luxury :)
So, what to do? Take the learning outside! There are a TON of awesome ways to have students keep learning in the great outdoors instead of locked up in a sticky classroom during the warmer month.
I’ve done a little research to find 5 great outside options for making learning fun. Take a look:

I love this idea! You can make any shape for the game board, longer or shorter. There are so many possibilities with this. I’ve even seen it where the students are the “moving pieces” and actually walk around the board. So cute!

This game would take a little preparation to make the letters {use cardboard and duck tape, or just card stock and write the letters on}, but once it’s made, think of how much fun your kiddos would have running around the lawn to create words! Divide students up into teams and see which group can make the most words with their tiles!

Students hop from word to word and say the word out loud as they land on it. I love it! Make it a race to see which student can hop through the words the fastest. This game is shown for sight words, but it could easily be modified for any concept. For example, instead of writing in words in the boxes, write in addition or multiplication problems. If a student lands on a box that says 3×3, he or she would say “9!”
Perfect for younger kids! If you have young children at home, you could even do this on one of those “I’m bored!” days :) Students look around the house, or school, to find things that start with each letter of the alphabet and bring it back to place under the correct letter.

This game would be a blast! Students hit the hockey puck aiming to have their puck land on a blend. When their puck lands on one {such as “pr“}, they can say a word that has that blend in it {like “pride”}. Again- modify for older kids. Write math problems for them to solve, or vocabulary words for them to give the definition to. Don’t have a set of hockey pucks and sticks? Use a koosh ball to land on a blend, or anything that won’t roll away!
So the next time you notice your students getting wiggly in their seats and staring outside into the warm sun – give one of these ideas a try! Let’s be honest – you want to be outside on those warm days just as much as they do :)
