Teaching About Heart Health

Looking to use Valentine’s day for inspiration for one of your lessons??? I love to use Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to teach about health (body systems) and expository writing. I begin by reading a few picture books about the heart and its purpose and functions.   We then have a discussion about what we can do (right now!) to keep their hearts healthy such as exercise, eat healthy foods, and manage stress. Then, the students write an expository writing piece about how to keep their heart healthy.We complete the lesson with a fun art project, using some red/pink paint.Students LOOOVE getting their hands dipped in red paint. They completely cover their hands and smear it ALLL over their fingers and palms. (Which of course, is their favorite part!) The students then make the shape of a heart with their two hands and press it onto a piece of construction paper.The students then glue their writing right next to their handprint heart.
