Cinco de Mayo Fiesta!

Happy Cinco de Mayo! Did you celebrate with your students today? Since we have a high percentage of Hispanic students and I have a Hispanic teacher’s aide with LOTS of artifacts…we had a GREAT fiesta today!

We started by learning about the Mexican culture and the significance of Cinco de Mayo. My instructional assistant had LOTS of awesome artifacts to pass around and show the kids!

For our fiesta, we learned about the Mexican flag, how to use a tortilla maker, an Aztec calendar and so much more!

My instructional assistant even dressed the part for today!

Students tried on authentic Mexican clothing!

After the presentation, the students created a Venn diagram comparing Mexico with the United States.

We used hula hoops for our graphic organizer!
Students then made their own pinatas! It was so simple! They took an empty milk carton, some streamers, and of course….candy!!

Do you have a Chipotle or any other Mexican restaurant in the town where you teach? If so, call and ask the manager if they can donate some tacos for your class. Or, ask if they are able to provide a discount for your class! You can also ask the parents to donate some taco ingredients!

Ask and you shall receive!
The manager at the Chipotle in our town donated burritos for our ENTIRE STAFF and OUR STUDENTS for FREE!!!!
I know, I know!!
After enjoying our tacos, the students then wrote a how to make a tasty taco, using transition words!
We ended the day with a friendship activity…A.K.A. Buenos Amigos!!
Students moved their desks in a circle around the classroom. They wrote as many kind words and compliments that they could about each child in one minute.

When I said, “Pasame el papel” or pass the paper, then students passed their paper to the student sitting on their right.
We continued until each child ended up with their own paper again.
How did you celebrate Cinco de Mayo with your students????
Adios Amigos!!  We have a retirement party to go to tonight! :)

  1. I love the idea of using the hula hoops for the graphic organizer. What a great way to take it to a different level.

That was incredibly generous of the restaurant to supply burritos for everyone. I'm impressed! The Chipoltle near us will come do a demonstration with the kids on how to plant seeds and talk to the kids about using fresh ingredients. Then the leave chips and their salsa and guacamole. Yum! They also left coupons for free kids meals. It was a great demonstration!
